Pre-Business | UD Business | Economics | By Status

The department maintains an active advising function and offers a full-time academic advisor with whom each Pre-Business student should consult on matters regarding general education, university requirements, the Pre-Business program, and routine major issues.

In addition, every full-time Business Administration or Economics faculty member actively advises students based on concentration, especially on matters relating to the major and careers. Early contact with a faculty advisor is essential.

Advising Information Based on Current Academic Status

Students completing the Pre-Business courses are under the advisement of the Pre-Business Advisor.  Appointments are required and can be made by calling the office (707) 664-2377.

Declare Pre-Business

Business Administration majors are assigned a faculty advisor when they have completed all Pre-Business requirements and have turned in the request for "change of status" form.

You can find who your faculty advisor is in your MySSU. Faculty advisors maintain their own calendars. Business Administration majors should see the Pre-Business Advisor only for questions relating to G.E. requirements or general questions about the major. For specific issues or questions about a custom concentration students can make an appointment with the Business Department Chair.

Transfer students should check impaction criteria on the Office of Admissions website when applying. Attend a University orientation as soon after admission as possible. Visit the Sonoma State University's Office of Admissions website for upcoming dates and other important information.

If you have completed coursework at a community college that you believe will meet any part of our pre-business requirements or economics requirements you may view our  Transfer Advisory List to see which courses we have approved as substitutions for courses required in our program. The list is updated on an ongoing basis, but is subject to change at any time with or without notice. If you do not find your college or course listed, please contact the office and request a Transfer Course Substitution Request form.

This list is NOT a substitute for proper advising! All students should meet with the academic advisor to evaluate progress toward the degree. Call the office at (707) 664-2377 to set up an appointment before or during your first semester at SSU.

Pre-Business Students
Students admitted as pre-business majors are under the advisement of the school's academic advisor. Call the office to set up an appointment (707) 664-2377.

Economics
Students admitted as Economics majors are under advisement of their faculty advisor, which is assigned by the Department Chair, but should see the school's advisor for questions regarding GE requirements.

Incoming freshmen should attend a University orientation as soon after admission as possible. University orientation information for incoming freshmen is available here. Freshmen may also enroll in UNIV 102 Freshman Seminar during their first semester. In this seminar, a team of advisors (faculty, staff and peer mentors) works with the students to assist in the transition to college.

Pre-Business Students
Freshmen admitted into the Pre-Business program are encouraged to meet with our Pre-Business Advisor during their first semester to ensure proper academic planning. Call the office at (707) 664-2377 to set up an appointment. To view a sample 4-year plan, click here.

Economics Majors
Economics majors should meet with their assigned faculty advisor early in their first semester. Advisors are assigned by last name, and are posted outside Stevenson 2042 or access a list of advisors here. Economics students with questions relating to G.E. requirements can meet with the Pre-Business Advisor. Call the office at (707) 664-2377 to set up an appointment.

Students who have yet to declare a major will need to speak with an Undeclared Advisor.
